RACE REPORT
Mendips Raceway is unique in Stock Car Racing circuits with tight well banked bends and both uphill and down hill sections. It’s a circuit that demands the greatest concentration from the drivers, testing their ability and cars to the limit. Add to this circuit a Smi-Final for the World Championship and the best in BriSCA racing is assured.
Good, no, Brilliant summer weather plus Gerry Dommetts personal touch to the presentation of the meeting, set the scene for an exciting race. All the qualifiers were there, but some with problems.
Pete Webb (8) in a borrowed car that was unfamiliar to him, Frank Bourne (16) had spent much of the night and morning straightening his car after a roll at Leicester the previous evening and finally lined up in his untested car minus a shock absorber on the track he had never before raced! Ray Leigh (346) had borrowed Bert Finnikins car and Mike Lewis (9) had the use of Hoss Fernihoughs motor following a troublesome night at Leicester as well.
Following the rollings laps behind the pace car, Dave Chisholm was quick to take the lead and had accellerated well clear of the pack for the first bend. Frank Bourne was not too far behind and Tony Allen slotted into third place. Both Pete Webb and Ray Leigh struck the fence on the back straight and were passed by the remainder of the field as George Ansell and Peter Guinchard settled down to a duel that was finally resolved in the eighth lap when the 375 car started pulling well clear of Guinchard. By this time Chisholm was lapping the tail-enders and Darkie Wright (7) had dropped from the runners. Four laps later, at half way stage, Frank Bournes heart must have nearly stopped when still fairly well established in second place he nearly spun in the first bend - he recovered only to strike the fence in the same place on the next lap.
By the start of the next 14th lap, Tony Allen, with very consistent driving, looked untouchable in second place. Meanwhile Chisholm was mopping up not only with the back markers but the sixth place man as well!!! With half a lap separating Chisholm and Allen, George Ansell (in third) was being challenged yet again by Guinchard but Ansells experience and trackcraft kept him ahead of Guinchards smoking car. Dick Sworder had several tough tussles with drivers - most of whom were not in the running - and probably had the most difficult race of all to achieve his 5th placing.
At the fall of the chequered flag Chisholm was still their having demonstrated that not only had he earned the Gold Roof he carries, but also he intends to keep it for a further season. DAVID CLARK - Brisca News
