How did you find Brisca F1 Stock Cars?
First saw stock cars at Owlerton Stadium, Sheffield with my dad, I was 10yrs old. Unfortunately my dad died in 1955 so my next visit to stock cars was when I was 19yrs old (1963) at Long Eaton.
What gave you the incentive to race
I was always interested in cars and was a mechanic at a small garage so had somewhere to keep and maintain a car, so decided to have a go!
First Car - Built, Bought or Borrowed
First car was bought minus engine and gearbox from Dennis Lee (117) for £25, I fitted 292ci Ford V8 Chassis was ex army Ford truck body Fiat Topolino
Memory of your first race.
First outing less than successful. Towing outfit failed on the Snake Pass to Manchester. Dennis Lee came out with his truck we transferred the car over and made it to Belle Vue. First race ended with clutch failure (and driver incompetence).
Best Racing Memory
Hard to pick out - Best racing memory as there were lots of good times. Perhaps winning a white top race at Belle Vue could be one. Might not sound exciting, but to race flat out at one of the best shale tracks in the country was great. Also some good memories of Sheffield in the early 70s.
Worst Racing Memory
No bad memories. Occasional disappointments. Real bad moments were hearing news like the death of Brian Wallace.
Reason for Retiring
After 13yrs of racing, I called it a day for various reasons. I was about to lose the storage for the car. Apart from my first car I built, maintained, and raced the cars virtually alone a lot of work and time. I also felt that a lot of money was being spent on the cars and any chances of success on a limited budget were slim.
After Retiring - What Then?
My interest in old cars continues. At present I have a 1934 Raleigh SAFETY Seven 3 wheeler, 1934 Austin 7, Citroen 2cv, and a 1962 Raleigh moped!! Now retired, I enjoy walking and taking life at a steadier pace. I rarely go to stock car meetings now. For me the magic of the sixties and seventies has gone.
