DRIVER INTERVIEW

How did you find Brisca F1 Stock Cars?
Got taken by my then future brother-in-law Alan Russell (who later was a mechanic for Dave Peters then myself. Got instantly bitten

What gave you the incentive to race
Who didn't fancy themselves as world champ. (never really had the dedication or cash!) I used to travel with the Peters brothers from time to time as we all lived in Hatfield.

First Car - Built, Bought or Borrowed
A part built new car from Pete Shepherd, End of the year the rules where changed for roll cages and as I had no facilities for doing it myself ,I had it done by a local chap whose name evades me, some connection with Harry Linney I think. While it was being done (1970 season) I brought an old Junior and raced that for 3 meetings.

Memory of your first race.
Last Brafield meeting of 69, had problems with it cutting out every time the flag went down (I started at the back) turned out to be the fuel tap was not letting enough fuel through, and not getting any start money. First proper race in F1 was at Crayford can't really remember much about it. All this was at the time a certain driver from Rochdale was reputed to be spending a lot of money on a special engine. Realised I couldn't compete on my very limited budget.

Best Racing Memory
These would be in Junior/F2 Qualifying for 1975 World final.

Worst Racing Memory
Two really, both in the twos. Being dragged upside down along the then back straight at Brafield (photo on Dave Kiplings "old stox" site, and the steering column shearing as I went sideways into the bend at Boston, wheel goes out the window, I go backwards at speed into the fence , broken ribs bruised legs.

Reason for Retiring
From F1, it was not having the resources to compete. I've always been a budget racer, run on a shoestring which quite often broke!

After Retiring - What Then?
F2s since, Still trying to completely pack up. I've been racing very spasmodically (10yrs off at one point) Got married had children (hence no money). When I do finally say goodbye to the car, theres a different kind of racing to be done. Last year I took part in the final leg of a Round The World yacht race, we went from New York to Nova Scotia then across the atlantic to Londonderry up and around Scotland to Holland and finally back to Southampton. Two months away. So that makes me an international racer! Even carried a "Rick at the Races" sticker with me. (Dick Young 67)
