How did you find Brisca F1 Stock Cars?
First saw Stock Car Racing at Woodhouse Stadium in Wigan (where I grew up), in the 50's when I was only yo' high,and loved it then ! ( I was probably about 6 or 7 years old, the Hart's from Coppull were racing, and I particularly remember a huge thing called "The Beech Hill Bulldozer" !). Subsequently,much later, saw one of Mike Parker's dramatic posters advertising Nelson, so went to have another look !
What gave you the incentive to race
What more incentive to race do you need, after watching a meeting ?....Gertie, Ellis Ford; Peter Farrington, flying round in that Beetle bodied Chev..the smell, the noise, the crowd, so I went to watch at Belle Vue, and that was it !
First Car - Built, Bought or Borrowed
Bought my first car off Martin Johnson, who was a stable-mate of Peter Farringtons at Ashton, nr Wigan. I gave him £60.00 and some car spares, and he delivered it to the garage I worked at, at that time. (I think he wanted to make sure I got it before I changed my mind)....Dear God, that thing was a tank, had an Oldsmobile 'Rocket' V8 in it, and handled like a brick !
Memory of your first race.
Went to Nelson, only just scraped scrutineering, and lasted about 3 laps before I conked out. Got back on the track, and found out that it was a lot harder than I thought !
Best Racing Memory
I guess it has to be the only race I ever won, at Blackburn in the pouring rain. But I have so many "Best" memories, all time favourite track (White City), great mates with people like Derek Fairhurst; John Young; Kevin Bentham, Peter Lee; Alex McDade; Simon Gill; and all the other guys (and girls) who just seemed to enjoy everything about Stox, including the after racing !....I never really found that many people in the game that were downright nasty, and even though I never was a real 'contender', I only ever got help, advice and encouragement,from everyone from other drivers to track staff.
Worst Racing Memory
Worst Racing memory? I managed to tangle with both Frankie and Len Wolfenden at the same time on a Thursday night (must have been Blackburn) and took them out of contention... Lennie put me into the Starter's rostrum on the Saturday night at Rochdale...that hurt, and having a mega-roll at Bradford....but didn't everybody ?
Reason for Retiring
Reason for retiring ?....like a lot of other low-graders,it was the money,honey !...Just couldn't keep up with work and racing and kids etc.,and there seemed to a lot of people coming into the sport that had the money to buy the power.
After Retiring - What Then?
