DRIVER INTERVIEW

How did you find Brisca F1 Stock Cars?
I was an apprentice mechanic and the chap I worked with was Kim Stevenson ex 21. I went to watch him at Leicester, then he retired as he could not afford a chevy! I spectated with another guy from work Steve Clarke ex 262 and my brother came with us. Also at my work was one of Danny Clarke's ex.203 mechanics as well as a guy that helped Roger Hollingshead ex.305.

What gave you the incentive to race
My brother, kevin, bought a car of Johnny Goodhall ex.261 and was looking for a trailer. He ended up buying  a car and trailer from Stu Brown ex 410, so I had the car and number 410.

First Car - Built, Bought or Borrowed
Stu's wife was not a fan and he retired. I finished this car off ready for 1984 season.

Memory of your first race.
Had one practice run at Brafield in the rain. 1984 was the drivers strike, so no racing till first Coventry and I was on reserve list. Got a call from Dave at 4:30 - I was in the meeting! I had not raced anything before so it was in at the deep end! My two memories are, people telling me to enjoy myself and after about 5 laps thinking to myself going ok here then being passed on the home straight by a train of red tops at a speed that seemed unbelieveable!!!! I finished the race shaken not stirred!

Best Racing Memory
Winning my race, a heat at Coventry, where for most of the race I was in amongst the reds racing with them, and British Championship at Coventry - 2nd in consolation thus qualified for the big race. There are loads of others as I loved every minute of racing but repairing not so much!

Worst Racing Memory
None really, got injured once as I hit the fence very hard at Brafield thanks to 212. You do see stars and your ears ring; by the way I was off work for a few days. Last meeting at Yarmouth when I realised it was time to knock it on the head.

Reason for Retiring
You need to be on or very near the pace otherwise you get knocked around to much (it hurts longer when you are older) I decided I would not race without the best kit which I cannot afford - until my numbers come up!

After Retiring - What Then?
Did some Hot Rod type racing, and I have an F2 at the moment (bought off John Davies ex F1 58) still get knocked around but not so heavily!
