Fred Mitchell #38 started his racing career in 1954. Fred was a prolific racer, not a driver to be messed with, but overall probably the best driver of his era. Fred won two World Titles in 1962 & 1966, and the National Points Title three times in 1957, 1959 & 1960. Fred finally gave up racing in 1970, watching his son Les #238 becoming a top driver.
The Fred Mitchell Memorial Trophy was first held in 1998 at Coventry, as Fred was a founder member of the Veterans Association, and the trophy was contested until 2005 at Coventry, where it was then moved to Brafield...ooops Northampton!! ..for 2006 where it remains and is held at the Nostalgia Day in October each year..
