Johnny started racing back in 1962, and had amassed 5 different racing numbers before his untimely death in 1995.
Many many cars Johnny raced, but his symbol for which he was recognised was the "Skull and Crossbones".
1976 was Johnny's best chance of a title, that being the World Final at White City. He started on the front row, in a borrowed Stuart Smith #391 car and raced into the lead.
It wasn't to be as Johnny was fenced with Mike Close #199 by Willie Harrison #2, whom also went in the fence.
One year later, Johnny took Willie out of the lead in the 1977 World Final from a lap down as revenge for the year before.
Johnny was a buoyant character, always having a laugh, but in July 1995, a tragic racing incident at Coventry saw Johnny loose his life to the sport he had loved for 33 years.
The Memorial Trophy was raced for at the July Coventry meeting each year until 2005, and presented to the Final Winner.
