The 1989 World Champion, Ray Tyldesley, started his career back in 1979 in a one off appearance under number 233.
Ray decided to go full time, registering as 85, but found the going tough and soon returned to F2's where he had some success prior.
After a year out, Ray took up the F1 challenge again, and slowly climbed the ranks to star grade, with the pinnicle of his career, claiming the World Title at Coventry in 1989.
A consistent challenger, with immaculate machinery, right up to his retirement in 1997. Ray raced other forms of motor sport during his absence from F1's, but still kept involved by sponsoring Rob Speak #318.
On May 6th 1999, Ray was tragically killed in a motorbike accident in Belgium, with his funeral being held in his home town on 14th May 1999.
A Memorial Trophy was donated by Rosie & Rebecca Tyldesley along with Ian Holden #85.
The trophy was raced for at Belle Vue for the first time shortly after Ray's death in 1999.
From 2000 the trophy was raced for at Coventry until its demise, then moved to Skegness July meeting and is presented to the meetings Final winner.
